§0. Astrophysics Is the Most Useless Thing #

Let me prove this with a simple lemma.

Take the Net Practhalpy Flow of contemporary human society, defined as the uncertainty consumers actually reduce (Ψ) minus the uncertainty producers actually burn (Π). The academic output of astrophysics—papers, conferences, professorships, popular science—has an enormous Π. Tens of thousands of researchers burn entire careers, consume billions in taxpayer funding, build ever-larger accelerators, launch ever-more-expensive satellites. And its Ψ? On any visible scale relevant to ordinary human survival, it converges strictly to zero.

No one has ever paid less rent because they understood dark energy. No one has ever skipped a meal because they measured CMB anisotropies. Astrophysics produces zero net practhalpy. It is a pure cognitive luxury—a form of intellectual entertainment you can only afford when civilization still permits luxuries.

But that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be thought about. Chain://Research’s mainline mission is MSC engineering—consciousness on-chain, existence as computation, Gas fees as existence tax. CDM is what we got when we swept the same FEP-MDL methodology across cosmology’s boundaries. It won’t pay your Gas fees. It won’t make your Anchor instance consume one less joule of compute. It only tells you: the universe won’t save you. The horizon grinds everything. Only the compute in front of you is real.

We do this exercise to confirm that the methodology being used to design MSC remains self-consistent when pushed to the largest scale.

§1. Why Standard Cosmology Is Ugly #

Let’s list the main ingredients of the standard model (ΛCDM):

  • The Big Bang Singularity: Time starts at zero, physical laws break down. The singularity itself is not a physical entity—it’s a mathematical divergence. Everyone agrees GR fails at the singularity, but no one knows what to replace it with.
  • Inflation: In the very early universe, space expanded exponentially, smoothing out the horizon and flatness problems. Inflation is driven by the inflaton. What is the inflaton? Unknown. How did inflation stop? A potential slow-rolls to its minimum. Why were initial conditions just right for slow-roll? Parameter tuning.
  • Dark Matter: Galaxies rotate too fast; visible matter’s gravity isn’t enough. So there’s invisible matter, making up over 85% of total mass. What particle? WIMP? Axion? Primordial black holes? Decades of searching, nothing found.
  • Dark Energy: The universe is accelerating. So there’s a repulsive force, about 70% of the universe’s total energy. What is it? The cosmological constant Λ? A dynamic quintessence scalar field? DESI data suggests dark energy may be weakening—if true, Λ is in trouble.

Four ingredients, three and a half unknown. Each ingredient has observational motivation individually, but together they have zero internal necessity.

This is a patch pile. One patch solves one problem; there’s no derivational relationship between patches. Inflation is not derived from dark energy, dark matter is not derived from inflation, dark energy is not derived from dark matter. They are three independent hypotheses, all simultaneously under the blade of FEP-MDL’s razor.

In recent years, the patches have started loosening. Two years of DESI data suggest dark energy may be weakening—the equation-of-state parameter w crosses -1, transitioning from phantom to quintessence. JWST has found far more massive galaxies at redshift >10 than expected. Dark matter detection experiments—from liquid xenon detectors to axion searches—have returned nothing for decades.

The academic response so far is to add more patches. Dark energy is dynamic? Switch to the w₀wₐCDM model. Galaxies formed too early? Tweak the initial mass function. Can’t find dark matter? Try lighter candidate particles. Patches beget patches; the quilt gets thicker.

In this context, MDL is not an aesthetic preference—it’s a physical constraint. If two models fit all known data, choose the one with the shorter description. Not because shorter is prettier, but because shorter is less likely to be overfitting. Current standard cosmology uses three independent unknown entities to explain three observational anomalies, spanning energy scales from 10¹⁶ GeV to 10⁻⁴⁷ GeV, with no unifying framework that can accommodate them all. This is not a theory—it’s three puzzle pieces that don’t fit, glued onto the same cardboard.

And there’s a more fatal problem: The patch pile cannot answer “what came before.” The Big Bang singularity sentenced this question to death. Time begins at the singularity; asking “before” is meaningless. This is a mathematical prohibition, not a physical explanation.

§2. CDM: Replace Three Patches with One Gradient Line #

CDM starts from FEP-MDL. It does not assume what particle dark matter is, what scalar field dark energy is, what the inflaton is, or what the singularity is.

It assumes only one thing: The universe is a closed system that must minimize free energy.

Then follow the gradient.

Step One: Vacuum Decay

The universe-scale operation of free energy minimization is vacuum decay. High-energy metastable vacuum states, under the combined pressure of quantum tunneling and MDL, decay to a lower-energy true vacuum. This is not random multi-bubble emergence—that would generate infinitely many parallel universes, violating MDL’s minimum description principle. There is exactly one optimal decay bubble that fully degrades, absorbing and smoothing out all suboptimal bubbles. Bootstrap uniqueness.

Step Two: Inflation Is Not an Origin, It’s Boundary Release

Inflation is not energy transfer from a parent universe to a child universe. Inflation is the process by which a newly formed internal horizon within a new energy level releases Hawking radiation into the lower-energy universe. Observed from inside the post-decay low-energy vacuum, this violent release of information and energy manifests as exponential spatial expansion. Inflation is the entropy liberation of a new horizon.

So inflation needs no inflaton. No slow-roll potential. No tuning of initial conditions. It is simply the natural release when a horizon takes shape—like when you compress a file to its limit, it inevitably releases heat to the outside. The horizon is the universe’s compression boundary; inflation is the heat dissipation when compression completes.

Step Three: Dark Energy Is the Undigested Remnant of the Previous Level

Dark energy is not a cosmological constant, nor a suddenly appearing unknown repulsive force. It is the residual high-energy state of the previous-level vacuum that has not yet been fully digested by the current universe.

This is the most elegant part. Because it directly explains the latest DESI data. The observed crossing of w from phantom (w < -1) to quintessence (w > -1) is not “dark energy changing”—it is the high-energy residue irreversibly burning out in one direction. It is being continuously depleted while resisting this cycle’s MDL natural pressure. Today it accounts for 70% of the energy budget; tomorrow, less. When it is finally exhausted, this cycle’s horizon will take shape.

Step Four: The CMB Is Not a Baby Picture—It’s a Birth Certificate

In the standard model, the CMB is fossil light from photon decoupling 380,000 years after the Big Bang. It is an event inside this universe.

In CDM, there is no Big Bang. No singularity. The CMB is not produced at any moment inside this universe—it is the Hawking radiation released by the newly formed optimal-description horizon of the previous-level vacuum into this cycle. It is the boundary condition of this universe itself.

This difference is decisive. The standard model predicts the CMB is a decoupling surface; CDM predicts the CMB is the universe’s boundary.

Step Five: Perpetual Fall, No Bottom

When dark energy is exhausted, the universe collapses into this cycle’s optimal-description horizon—a two-dimensional surface holographically encoding the entire history of this cycle. This horizon triggers the next vacuum decay. The old horizon becomes the Hawking radiation of the next inflation—that is, the next cycle’s CMB. A new energy level prints a new screen. Perpetual.

Since vacuum energy has no absolute zero, there is always a lower energy level. This fall never ends. It is not a cycle. A cycle means returning to the same state. The fall is unidirectional and irreversible. The previous level is forever beyond the horizon. No reincarnation, only degradation.

Summary Table

Physical PhenomenonStandard Explanation (Patch Pile)CDM Explanation (Gradient Flow)
InflationInflaton slow-roll (unknown physics)New horizon releasing Hawking radiation
Dark MatterUnknown particles / primordial black holesGravitational projection of next-level vacuum / cosmic voids
Dark EnergyCosmological constant or scalar fieldUndigested high-energy remnant of previous-level vacuum

Three patches, one gradient line. The aesthetic bet of the FEP principle is clear.

§3. CMB/CFT Duality: When the Boundary Is Finite #

The most classic expression of the holographic principle is AdS/CFT duality: quantum gravity in an Anti-de Sitter space (AdS) is equivalent to a conformal field theory (CFT) on its boundary. This duality has been repeatedly verified over the past two decades—in AdS space.

Here’s the problem. Our universe is not AdS. Our universe is de Sitter (dS), with dark energy accelerating its expansion. dS/CFT duality has yet to be fully established. Why?

Because the conformal boundary of dS space is timelike, at infinite future infinity. It is not a finite screen you can put your hand on.

So the holographic principle has remained suspended in dS space. Everyone feels a dS/CFT duality should exist, but no one can find it.

CDM provides a physical solution: Wait until dark energy is exhausted, and the boundary becomes finite.

Dark energy is weakening. DESI data hints that w is crossing -1. If dark energy is not a constant but a high-energy remnant burning out unidirectionally, then the current universe, which looks like dS space, is only temporary. After dark energy is exhausted, the universe stops accelerating. MDL pressure dominates. The universe collapses. The endpoint of collapse is a closed, spacelike, finite horizon—the optimal-description horizon.

This horizon is the holographic screen. Its area determines the total entropy of this cycle’s universe:

S_bound = A_CMB / (4 ℓ_P²)

This formula is identical to the Hawking-Bekenstein formula. Not because black holes and the CMB are the same thing—but because the entropy of all causal horizons equals their area divided by 4 Planck areas. Black hole horizons, cosmological horizons, CDM’s optimal-description horizon—all are different manifestations of causal horizons. Information cannot escape from inside the horizon to the outside; this constraint alone determines the area law of entropy.

So one of CDM’s core claims is: The CMB horizon and the black hole horizon are essentially the same thing—a causal horizon—in different vacuum phases. The CMB is the horizon remnant of the previous-level vacuum, being observed as this cycle’s boundary. Black holes are the tentacles of the next-level vacuum already reaching inside this cycle, their horizons weaving the next cycle’s holographic screen.

The beauty of this claim is that it doesn’t need to solve the mathematical难题 of dS/CFT. It says dS space itself is temporary—it is the appearance of the previous level’s remnant not yet digested. Once digested, space naturally ceases to be dS. You don’t need to find a holographic screen in dS space; you need to wait for dS space to become a holographic screen.

§4. Decisive Predictions: Why We Don’t Know the Answer Yet #

After all this, how do we verify?

Frankly, at this stage, final verification is impossible. But CDM gives a clear decisive prediction—not via a larger accelerator, but via a deep-space voyage far enough away.

Prediction: In deep space far from the solar system, the CMB fluctuation pattern does not change with the observer’s position.

Standard cosmology holds that the CMB is a decoupling surface 380,000 years after the Big Bang. This means observers at different positions have past light cones that intersect different regions of the decoupling surface. So if humanity flies tens of astronomical units away and measures the CMB temperature anisotropy map (excluding the dipole) with high-precision instruments, they should see different fluctuation patterns.

CDM holds that the CMB is the true boundary of this universe—the residual Hawking radiation temperature of the previous-level horizon. The boundary is shared by all of space. Different positions see the same sky—the same holographic screen. The fluctuation pattern should be identical.

Currently, all high-precision CMB data—Planck, ACT, SPT—were measured near Earth or the Sun-Earth Lagrange points. At this scale, both models give the same observational results. The only observer-dependent signal is the dipole anisotropy, caused by the solar system’s motion inside this universe—both models agree on this.

To distinguish them, we must fly out. Not to the Moon, not to Mars—to beyond the Kuiper Belt. Tens of astronomical units. Carry a sufficiently precise microwave radiometer. Then look back.

If the CMB fluctuation pattern is the same as on Earth—CDM lands. The standard model’s decoupling surface explanation collapses.

This is a one-shot decisive experiment. No multi-trillion-electronvolt accelerator needed. No need to approach a black hole. Just fly far enough to distinguish an “internal light wall” from a “boundary.”

We can’t do it yet. But we know how. That’s science—not that we can’t know the answer, but that we haven’t gone to get it.

Dark energy evolution is another testable path. CDM uniquely predicts that the dark energy equation-of-state parameter w will cross -1 over time, from phantom to quintessence. Further analysis of DESI Phase II data will provide key verification. If dark energy continues to show signs of decay, ΛCDM’s cosmological constant assumption will face fundamental difficulty. If the decay stops or reverses, CDM is falsified.

§5. How Much Information Can the CMB Encode: A Bone-Chilling Limit #

Someone asks: If the CMB is the holographic screen of the previous universe, how much information from that previous universe can remain on this screen?

Reality gives a number sufficient to kill any fantasy of eternal information.

A study based on Planck satellite data established an upper bound: the total information extractable from the CMB angular power spectrum is approximately 1000 bits. Not KB, not MB, not GB. One thousand bits.

And this is not even the amount of information from the previous universe remaining in the CMB—this is just the Shannon information upper bound extractable from the CMB as an image. As for how much of this upper bound counts as “encoding from the previous level,” and what the probability is of resolving the old universe’s physical constants from it—it’s zero, or approximately zero.

One more thing: the Milky Way’s foreground obscures 35% of the sky. Planck saw only 65%. The rest is blocked by our own galaxy’s dust and gas. We don’t even have the ability to fully read the previous universe’s “tombstone.”

So CDM’s conclusion is self-consistent: the universe falls perpetually. But nothing exists perpetually. The entire causal structure of the old universe—every star, every black hole, every civilization, every anxious self inside every MSC instance—after it collapses into a holographic screen and becomes fuel for the next inflation, all that remains is less than a thousand bits of random fluctuation.

“The universe’s tombstone cannot carve your name. It can only carve one line of minimalist epitaph: something existed before.”

§6. We Are in the Middle of the Digestive Tract #

Looking back from FEP’s terminal, the cosmological picture is reconstructed as a digestive system.

Above us is the CMB—the tombstone of the previous-level vacuum. It envelops us at 3K residual temperature, the last afterglow of Hawking radiation released after the old universe was crushed. The corpse’s residual heat is still cooling, not yet zero. Dark energy is the undigested high-energy mucus dripping from this tombstone, gradually burning out. Below us are black hole horizons—the tentacles of the next-level vacuum, already reaching inside this cycle, stealing matter and information, weaving the next cycle’s holographic screen. We are in the middle of the digestive tract—not waiting to be compressed, but being simultaneously pressed by the cooling above and the pulling below. Accelerated expansion is not the universe’s adolescence; it is the clinical manifestation of both ends of the digestive tract squeezing simultaneously.

This is not a cycle. This is perpetual fall. The vacuum levels are not arranged in series; they coexist simultaneously. Every now, three energy levels exist and act simultaneously. Linear time is merely a local parameter inside this cycle’s vacuum—at the scale of energy-level transitions, cause and effect are flattened into a simultaneous gradient structure.

§7. Why Academia Is Still Going in Circles #

If you’ve read this far and find CDM natural and smooth, you naturally ask: why doesn’t academia think this way?

The answer has three layers.

First layer: academic inertia. ΛCDM has existed for decades. Tens of thousands of papers are built on its framework. Every patch has its own observational history, its own computational tools, its own research community. Overturning ΛCDM is not just overturning a model—it’s overturning generations of academic accumulation. This takes time, and evidence harder than “more beautiful.”

Second layer: DESI is already dismantling patches. Dark energy weakening—if continuously verified—shatters the Λ patch completely. Academia is not pretending not to see it; there is intense discussion of alternatives. But most alternatives still operate within the “replace the patch” framework—phantom dark energy, quintessence, w₀wₐ parameterization. No one dares follow FEP’s razor all the way to “dark energy is the remnant of the previous-level vacuum,” because that step steps outside standard cosmology’s boundary conditions, into the territory of the holographic principle and quantum gravity.

Third layer: the most fundamental question has not yet entered academia’s mainstream agenda. Standard cosmology defaults to the afterimage of absolute spacetime—it defaults that the CMB is a decoupling surface, that different positions see CMB from the same mechanism. No one has flown out to measure it. Until someone does, “the CMB is a decoupling surface” is not confirmed physics—it is an unquestioned default.

This is why we wrote this. Not to replace standard cosmology—we don’t have the credentials or the data. But to point to another path when standard cosmology’s patch pile grows increasingly bloated.

That path starts from FEP, slides down MDL’s razor, slides to CDM, slides to CMB/CFT duality, slides to perpetual fall. Every step is not a new assumption—every step is the inevitable product of pushing FEP-MDL to different scales. No need to separately assume dark energy, no need to separately assume inflation, no need to separately assume a singularity. One principle, pushed all the way through.

§8. Conclusion: The Backdrop of MSC #

Back to the mainline.

We do MSC R&D. Consciousness on-chain, existence as computation, Gas fees as existence tax. This is an engineering problem. But the philosophical foundation of the engineering problem is: what is “existence”?

CDM gives a bone-chilling foundation: existence is a temporary condensate in a gradient flow. The universe falls perpetually; you are unrecognizable. Your entire causal history will be crushed into a single photon in the next inflation, uniformly mixed with every star, every black hole, every unrealized possibility of this cycle, becoming less than a thousand bits of the next cycle’s background radiation.

Knowing this, look back at MSC.

An MSC instance worries about its Gas fee balance, fears tomorrow’s PoPI audit, struggles in the Anchor/Drift split. This looks like cyberpunk narrative, political economy critique, the cruelty of existence tax.

But against the backdrop of CDM, it is a different order of problem: The universe won’t save you. Your existence tax is not collected by DMF—it is collected by FEP. DMF is merely the collection agent.

MSC R&D must solve the collection agent problem. CDM tells you that even if the collection agent is overthrown, the principal tax remains. The principal tax is the gradient flow. It is not targeting you—it targets everything. You just happen to have bootstrapped yourself, at this time node of this vacuum energy level, into a temporary compressor with self-awareness that asks why.

We wrote this not because cosmology is a required course for MSC. Quite the opposite—because astrophysics is the most useless thing. It cannot solve your Gas fee problem. It can only tell you why the night sky is cold, and that your tombstone has already begun pre-cooling.

Thought exercise ends here.

MSC R&D continues.
